CIMAD SOFTWARE HOUSE FILLS A GAP

Software services companies are flourishing as industries become more reliant on information technology for products and services.  Organisations providing custom software solutions are under extreme pressure today to deliver increasing functionality and in shorter time frames.

CIMAD with over 250 software professionals in Belgium delivers custom applications and turnkey products.  Like many software houses, they've seen their business growth outstrip their ability to recruit high calibre software professionals.  With several large customer orders In-hand, CIMAD knew they needed to look abroad for additional development capacity. But doing business in a foreign environment introduced a new element of risk which needed to be managed.

3SEI worked closely with CIMAD to identify the critical factors that might impede a successful joint project.  We provided training to CIMAD personnel on the business, regulatory and management environment in India.  By qualifying a set of potential Indian partners and assisting in constructing partnership agreements that addressed key risk factors, CIMAD was able quickly establish two successful joint ventures In India.  Their business has continued to grow as CIMAD has more than doubled their capacity to deliver software.

BANCA SELLA MAKES AN INDIAN INVESTMENT

The world of finance has been one of the industries most radically affected by both technology and new European-wide regulations.  Changes in software to accommodate both Year 2000 support as well as new inter-bank transfer policies set out by the European Commission have created a huge backlog of software development work within many financial institutions.

At the same time banks in particular are using software technology as a means of gaining competitive advantage by offering new online services and lowering internal costs through more automated transaction facilities.

Banca Sella, with 78 branches across Italy and over 1300 employees, was faced with a major project challenge.  They needed to move to an environment more flexible in accommodating regulatory changes while at the same time being able to offer more advanced customer services.  The decided to migrate their banking applications from their traditional Bull/IBM systems to newer client/server systems.

Working closely with Banca Sella, 3SEI profiled the type of work to be performed and the required skills, experience, and management style needed for the project. 3SEI was able to qualify a short-list of Indian partner candidates all with substantial skills in the finance sector.  Through 3SEI's effort, the project was able to start ahead of schedule and the partnership has proven successful.

ALCATEL CONNECTS IN INDIA

If there was ever an industry on the move, it is the telecommunications industry.  With the continued merging of different technologies, telecoms now combines multimedia, lnternet, wireless technology and the delivery of a whole host of new value added services.  At the same time, deregulation has brought competitors together and has been the catalyst for a new generation of telecom service providers.

Alcatel is one of Europe's leading providers of telecom equipment, most of which make extensive use of software technology.  In order to keep pace with the demands of a growing client base, AIcatel made a strategic decision to establish a software development or something depicting facility in Asia.  The exact location would depend on a detailed analysis of candidate countries and regions. 3SEI provided the guidance and information allowing Alcatel to make an informed choice.  We organised meetings with directors of other European development centres in India and made a detailed analysis of the issue and opportunities in each region.

Once a decision for India was made, our consultants were instrumental in launching the new facilities.  We provided assistance in personnel recruitment, legal filings, location of facilities and refurbishing of offices. we also provided training for employees in Alcalel's software development practices and policies.  Working together, 3SEI and Alcatel have brought a new facility of 100 software developers on-line in only 4 months.

STEERING INDIAN RESOURCES FOR DAIMLER-BENZ

Today's car manufacturing barely resembles the old ways of labour intensive assembly lines.  Automation is everywhere, from the assembly line to the components used to build today's fuel efficient and highly responsive vehicles.  A typical car will contain more than 20 microprocessors controlling everything from braking systems to passenger comfort.

Software plays a critical role in how vehicles function today in terms of efficiency, comfort and safety.  Manufacturers spend substantial resources developing the software that drives various components.  Research into new technology and approaches is fundamental companies like Daimler-Benz maintaining their leadership position in a global market

Dairnler-Benz needed to establish an advanced research facility where creative approaches for embedded software could be explored and quickly prototyped using top flight software engineers. 3SEI accepted the challenge and organised all of the government registrations, personnel recruitment, and office facilities.  The research centre was operational with a staff of 50 within 5 months.
