Frontec AMT of Sweden ties-up with an Indian IT company for EDI and e-commerce

Frontec AMT of Sweden has tied-up with CMC Ltd, India's leading IT service organization in the public sector, to provide services and solutions for electronic data interchange (EDI) and e-commerce.

The tie-up would provide customers in India with complete electronic commerce solutions through the integration of INDONET, CMC's commercial data network, with Frontec's core product, AMTrix. This product would provide INDONET with an open messaging environment and the flexibility to offer organizations with quick and secure electronic transactions and trading solutions.

According to Frontec's regional managing director for Asia-Pacific, the partnership is part of the strategy to provide market-leading solutions for message-based integration throughout the supply chain.


Baan Institute, Hyderabad, and the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, sign a MoU for ERP software development

Baan Institute, Hyderabad, set up by Baan Company of Netherlands, and the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, (IIT-D), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for collaboration in research and education for enterprise resource planning (ERP) and management. This collaboration is under the aegis of Baan Institute's University Synergy Programme (USP) to encourage interaction and exchange of information between industry and educational institutions.

Under the MoU, IIT-D and Baan Institute, in co-operation with the Baan Company, have agreed to establish a close working relationship, which will mutually benefit both institutions. The implementation of the MoU will be overseen by the Hyderabad-based Baan Institute.


Euro Prisma BV of Netherlands sets up joint venture projects in India for software training and development

Euro Prisma BV of Netherlands has tied-up with Wipro Infotech, Bangalore, and Computer Associates Inc. of US for a joint venture to set up the first global CA Unicenter Competence Centre in India for software professionals.

The Competence Centre, located at Wipro's Bangalore facility, will train software professionals as certified Unicenter TNG engineers, qualified to implement Unicenter TNG enterprise management solutions for CA's clients worldwide. The Centre will have up to 120 Unicenter experts by March 1999. The three companies have got together to train software professionals to meet the high demand for such IT professionals. These professionals, comprising 75% of Wipro employees and 25% of Euro Prisma employees, will service CA Unicenter TNG worldwide. CA's Unicenter TNG, introduced just 18 months ago, already has over 9,000 clients worldwide, and has contributed 50% to CA's total revenues of $4.5 billion in 1997.

Euro-Prisma has also plans to enter into a joint venture with the Bangalore-based Hardsoft Solutions Pvt. Ltd. to set up its subsidiary in the country. It proposes to invest 20 million Dutch guilders in the next three years for its operations in the country. The company will pick up 75% stake in the new entity - Euro-Prisma India Pvt Ltd., while Hardsoft Solutions will have the balance equity. Hardsoft Solutions is involved in developing software solutions and implementing turnkey projects in the country.


BPL Telecom, Bangalore, ties-up with German and other international companies for telecom software development

BPL Telecom, part of the Bangalore-based BPL Electronics Group, has tied-up with Skeye, a subsidiary of Grundig of Germany, to develop software for hand-free car phones. The voice activated phone which will offer such features as hand-free dialing, hand-free recording and playback will be launched in the German market shortly.

BPL Telecom has also entered into a tie-up with a Japanese major in telecommunications and office automation to develop software for web phones. About 50% of the software requirements for the web phone will be developed by BPL Telecom. The web phone, apart from having the capacity to send and receive e-mail, will also provide features such as speech recognition. The product will be introduced in the Japanese and US markets shortly.


Indo-American joint venture company to set up a software development centre in Bangalore

Manipal Control Data Electronic Commerce (MCD-ECOM), a joint venture of the Ramesh Pai Manipal Group and Control Data Systems, USA, will shortly open a software data centre in Bangalore. The centre would address all software developmental projects for Control Data Systems.

The Manipal Group will hold 30% stake in the joint venture, while Control Data Systems and the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation (ICICI) of India will hold 26% equity each, with the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign investors accounting for the rest.


Amex Inc. of US ties up with an Indian company for marketing ERP package

Amex Inc., a $25 million company based in the US, has forged a marketing tie-up with Computech International Ltd., Calcutta, for marketing the enterprise resource planning (ERP) packages developed by the Indian company.

According to the terms of the tie-up, the American company will market the ERP packages developed by Computech under the former's brand name.


Indian software company ties up with US-based firms

India CompuMaster (P) Ltd. (ICM), an off-shore software development facility in Hyderabad, will support the activities of US-based CompuMaster Inc., and Integrated Design Tools Inc. (IDT). The Indian subsidiary will basically undertake software development for the US companies, simultaneously imparting high-end training to professionals.

Boston-based CompuMaster develops its own proprietary software for advanced scientific applications. It specializes in acquisition, control and processing of high resolution digital images through CCD arrays up to 4000 x 4000 pixels.

Integrated Design Tools, Florida, focuses on collaborative engineering solutions for product realization using software agent technologies. It also provides customized solutions for CAD and CAM, using object oriented technologies.


Microsense, Chennai, ties-up with two US software companies

Chennai-based Microsense which is engaged in providing Internet and Intranet solutions and value-added services like e-mail solutions, web hosting services, virtual Intranets etc., has tied-up with Cuberic and Alt-n - two US-based software developing companies - to market their softwares : ShareMail and ShareNet.

ShareMail provides multiple e-mail accounts both within the LAN and on the Net. The features of ShareMail software include automated dialing, auto responder, mailing list forms and automated files-on-demand service. For dedicated/leased connection to the Internet, ShareMail functions as a full-fledged Internet mail server.

ShareNet is a package which allows the sharing of single TCP/IP connection with multiple users on a single LAN.


Tata Consultancy Services, Mumbai, ties-up with a US firm to sell Java-based software products

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Mumbai, has entered into an alliance with the US-based software major, Keylabs, for 100% java purification and vending of other java products. As a result of the alliance with Keylabs, TCS will be able to co-market its products with Sun Microsystems and also get the rights to use the 100% pure Java logo. The partnership will also give the Indian software company broader market penetration, streamlined software development and delivery and also reduce the development cost and time.


Indian software exports company enters into an alliance with Alpha Data of Abu Dhabi

HMT (International) Ltd. (HMT-I), a subsidiary of HMT Ltd., Bangalore, one of India's largest public sector companies, which has recently diversified into software exports, has entered into a strategic alliance with Alpha Data L.L.C., Abu Dhabi, to synergize the strengths of the two companies in developing software business for HMT's ERP solution, VIKAS, in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

As per the agreement, the two companies will jointly market Vikas in GCC countries. HMT (I) will be stationing software specialists in Abu Dhabi for this purpose.


Computer Associates International forms global alliance with HCL Corporation, New Delhi

Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) of the US, the business software major, and New Delhi-based HCL Corporation, the $650 million Indian IT company, have announced a global agreement to provide Unicentre TNG customers with a broad spectrum of professional software services. The agreement is CA's first formal collaboration worldwide for training and support services.

Under the agreement, HCL's services will be available in three categories – certified training and education, specialized professional services, including implementation and global roll-out, and collaborative software consulting, emphasizing on-site and off-shore delivery of a broad range of services.


Satyam Computer Services renews its tie-up with General Electric Company of US

Satyam Computer Services, Hyderabad, and General Electric Company (GE) of the US have renewed their agreement to provide software and engineering services by Satyam for GE's global business needs for another three years.

Satyam and GE will also continue their existing relationship in the area of engineering services, including computer-aided-design, computer-aided- manufacturing and computer-aided analysis. The services will be provided by Satyam's offshore engineering development centre at Secunderabad.

According to a press release, GE has been sourcing software and engineering expertise from India for its global operations for several years. The President and CEO, GE India, said that GE believes that India's software and engineering capabilities to develop high-class value-added software and engineering services at attractive costs are second to none in the world.


Indian subsidiary of US-based Complete Business Solutions Inc. to market PeopleSoft's ERP software products

Complete Business Solutions India (CBSI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Complete Business Solutions Inc., of the US, has entered into a tie-up with PeopleSoft Inc. for marketing PeopleSoft's products in India. This alliance would enable Indian firms, system integrators and consulting firms to have local access to PeopleSoft's resources.

Since May 1997, CBSI had been an implementation partner of PeopleSoft Inc., for its global alliance programme. As a result of this new tie-up, a customer in India can also purchase the US firm's leading ERP software products from CBSI.

CBSI has already set up 'PeopleSoft Excellence Centres' in Hyderabad and California.


Indian software export house ties-up with US-based Nexgen SI for ERP development

Nexgen Technology Services (P) Ltd, a Calcutta-based software export house, has forged a technical tie-up with Nexgen SI, California, US, a $30 million company ranked at 134 by Inc. 500 magazine, for developing ERP software, based on the US company's methodologies.

According to Nexgen SI, the idea behind the collaboration is to appropriately exploit the vast pool of skilled manpower available in India for development of ERP software for Nexgen SI's clients in the US. Personnel of the Indian partner would be trained by the US company to familiarize themselves with Nexgen SI's working practices and methodologies and its focus on the client-server technology. Nexgen SI has already a subsidiary in Mumbai where enterprise relationship management (ERM) software is developed for clients in the US. At present, Nexgen Technology Services (P) Ltd., would develop software exclusively for Nexgen SI's clients in the US.


Metamor Solutions of US ties-up with the State Government of Andhra Pradesh to set up a software development facility at Hyderabad

US-based Metamor Solutions and the Andhra Pradesh Government have entered into an agreement to set up 'Metamor School of Excellence in Software Development Methodologies', as part of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), coming up at Hyderabad.

The Metamor School will involve a capital expenditure of over Rs. 3.00 crores ($ 750,000) initially and serve as a premier education centre for software development methodologies in the country. As per the agreement, the School will start operations within the next few months and will have an annual intake of about 500 students.

Metamor Solutions has also plans to set up a software development facility near Hyderabad, in collaboration with Metamor Global Solutions Ltd., and has acquired four acres of land in the Hitech city being developed by the State Government.


Microtech Software ties-up with CSC Asia Pacific to provide CAD solutions

Microtech Software and Consultants Limited, Mumbai, has tied-up with CSC Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CADAM System Corporation of Japan to provide mid-range mechanical CAD solutions in India.

This tie-up will launch in India Helix – a software engineering package that enables customers to take advantage of using existing 2D drawings to make 3D models and also decrease the design cycle. The Helix package consists of Helix modeling, 3D IGES, STL interface and parametric drafting etc.


Infogain India ties-up with US company for software development

State of the Art (SOTA), a US-based company which specializes in accounting packages for small and medium businesses, has recently entered into a pact with Infogain India for the development of its financial application products.

The tie-up under which Infogain will do mission-critical product development at its software development centre in Noida assumes significance in view of the fact that India's software expertise has traditionally been concentrated on software services, rather than on products. By 1999, the company plans to make around 25% of its software development in India, the reason being, according to the company officials, that Indian professionals do a better job in less time, leading to reduction in time loss.


Tata IT companies tie-up with Matra Datavisions of France to provide object-based CAD/CAM solutions

Tata Technologies India Ltd (TTIL) and Tata Elxsi India Ltd (TEIL) have tied-up with Matra Datavisions, a leader in CAD/CAM segments in France, to provide products and services that will enable object-based development of CAD/CAM solutions through CAS.CADE, an object-oriented application development platform.

While TEIL has been appointed as a national distributor, TTIL would be responsible for the service component, which includes development of specific applications.

CAS.CADE contains reusable software components and provides an impressive array of light productive tools and services that enable faster design cycles. Further, it can integrate with proprietary development platforms, commercial software, and legacy applications. The difference between traditional CAD/CAM/CAE software and CAS.CADE lies in its object-based approach. Design-intensive applications and processes require more specific functions and applications, which can encapsulate their design and manufacturing processes to improve productivity and quality. Generic products may not be able to offer this kind of optimization.
