Siemens Communications Software, Bangalore, launches three IT packages globally

Siemens Communication Software, Bangalore, the software division of Siemens Public Communication Networks Limited, announced recently the global launch of three software products developed by it. The three products include : Alina, a package for the administration of language for individual announcement, the Accessintegrator, a management system for access networks and Internet Supplementary Services, a package of services for accessing Internet via telephone lines.

On the occasion of the launch, the Director of Siemens Communication Software said that all the products developed at SCS will be delivered to Siemens, Germany, for the final integration into the total network and later released for worldwide use.


Indian subsidiary of IVL GmbH of Germany launches a data conversion engine

IVL India, a 100% subsidiary of IVL GmbH of Germany, specializing in software solutions based on SAP R/3 technology, is launching its latest product - the IVL Data Conversion Engine (DC Engine). The DC Engine is a graphical software product which builds and manages data interfaces for SAP R/3 systems. It helps and assists in the migration of data from a legacy system to the SAP R/3 system and automatically generates ABAP/4 programme for data migration interfaces. According to IVL, the product facilitates substantial savings in terms of programme development costs and also speeds up SAP implementation.

IVL India has already developed SAP R/3-based products for Internet applications, mobile computing, rules-based language, IVL Script, code analyzer and computer-based multimedia training kits.


HCL Infosystems, New Delhi, launches integrated hardware and software solutions for ISPs

HCL Infosystems, New Delhi, has announced the launch of enterprise service pack (ESP) comprising of hardware and software, as well as networking, integration and customization services. Specially designed for prospective Internet Service Providers (ISPs), these fully integrated solutions are key components of the infrastructure to provide Internet services countrywide. The ESP's highly scaleable solutions range from the entry-level ESP-in-a-box system for upto 500 subscribers to commercial production systems for high-end value-added services for 30,000 subscribers. Available on Unix and Windows NT, the ESP is designed to span a wide range of service infrastructure needs of ISPs.

HCL's ESP comprehensively addresses applications ranging from simple Internet access for dial-up/leased line users to providing web presence and manageable web site solutions.


Indian IT company develops a software solution for medical management

Delhi-based Crescent Software has launched Medic, a software package for doctors, that is claimed to be the only one of its kind in the Indian market. Based on Sybase and Power Builder, it is currently available in stand-alone versions, with the clinical version for a client-server environment expected to be launched shortly.

The software sports a number of modules for different categories of doctors. Currently, the modules available are for general physicians and surgeons. However, additional modules for ENT specialists, cardiologists, pediatricians and ophthalmologists are expected to be added soon. Eventually, the company expects to integrate all the management processes in hospitals such as inventory control, financial accounting, employee records and the like.


Digital India launches a software product for fraud management

Digital India has come out with version 5.0 of its Digital Fraud Management System (DFMS), software targeted mainly at the Indian cellular market.

DFMS is a fraud detection software tool which is used for analysis and decision support applications for wireless telecommunication service providers. This software will help detect fraud by reading and analyzing the same stream of call detail record that is used for billing purpose. This software will also help customization by defining parameters based on the unique business and customer policies.

This software has picked up demands in a big way in the US and UK markets. However, it is yet to make its mark in the Indian market.


Silicon Automation Systems, Bangalore, develops software-based decoders for Intel's pentium processors

Silicon Automation Systems (SAS), Bangalore, has developed software-based MPEG-I and MPEG-II decoders. The company has already released a set of MPEG decoder libraries targeted at Intel's Pentium processor with MMX technology and the Pentium II processors. The company is currently offering MPEG-I and MPEG-II audio and video decoders separately, with synchronized audio and video decoding, combining MPEG-II audio and video with Dolby AC3 option. The codec has the specific APIs to interface with a DVD drive or any MPEG stream for a variety of applications. SAS claims that it has the fastest 'soft' MPEG-II implementation for the Pentium available today.

The company, a 100% export-oriented unit, plans to export its decoders through the OEM route. The company is also working with two consumer electronics companies to embed the decoder core on non-Intel platforms.

Founded in 1989, SAS is focused on three key application areas - signal processing, design tool, and telecommunications.


NetAcross Communications, Mumbai, launches a ready-to-use software

NetAcross Communications Ltd. has launched the world's first ready-to-use software package, branded Unison. The software is said to have gained wide acceptance within the short span of time since its launch. Already, several Indian companies and organizations like Torrent Pharmaceuticals, British Council Division, Tata Iron & Steel Company (TISCO), the National Housing Bank, McCann Erickson India and Ranbaxy Laboratories are benefiting from using the Unison package.

Unison is also being bundled with the Digital Intel server along with 'Microsoft Small Business Server', thus giving a ready Intranet available to the customers through the Digital's channel partner network across India.


VeriFone Inc.'s Indian subsidiary to develop a software solution for e-commerce

VeriFone India Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Verifone Inc. of USA is developing an integrated payment system (IPS) which is an open electronic commerce management platform supporting consumers making purchases through an electronic media at a merchant countertop, over the Net or from home, using a consumer appliance. The company which has evolved itself as a transaction automation firm centered on banks, financial institutions and merchants would provide its payment domain knowledge for IPS.

Basically, VeriFone's IPS project seeks to fulfil two objectives: first, to integrate the company's products and, second, with an open architecture, to enable to accommodate offerings from third party companies.

According to the company, IPS will go a long way in helping bankers, financial investors (FIs) and merchants meet the challenges posed by the Internet business which is poised to bring about a paradigm shift in the way businesses operate. The IPS project basically involves evolving a common architecture for all of VeriFone's products.


Tata Elxsi, Bangalore, launches a defence- oriented software package

Tata Elxsi, the Bangalore-based IT company, has launched a new product: Virtual Prototyping, in association with its UK-based division. The product covers the entire gamut of designing and is most suited for defence purposes.

The company has also identified pharmaceutical drug designing and polymer technology as the key areas for applications development in the next few years. The company will expand its suite of products called: Molecular Simulation which has been brought into the country in association with the US-based MS Inc. In addition, it will also strengthen its skills in developing software for polymer technology, especially rubber.


Indian subsidiary of Micro Focus of US to launch euro currency conversion solution

Micro Focus (India), the subsidiary of Micro Focus of US, a $115 million company mainly into application development tool for Cobol, will be introducing in the worldwide market a solution for the euro currency problem. The company officials claim that it will be the first company in the world to come out with such a solution. Initially, Micro Focus will develop a solution for the parallel currency problem by May 98, and, later on, an Euro currency solution will be evolved.

Micro Focus, the only company in the world to offer Y2K solutions, offers a series of products and had recently launched SoftFactory 2000 which will enable customers to cut the time and cost of combating the Year-2000 crisis to a very great extent. With NetExpress, a cobol-based application on the web, the company claims to be the first in the world to come out with such a concept.


Indian company develops an electronic commerce software product

Manipal Control Data Electronic Commerce (MCD-ECOM), Bangalore, a joint venture of the Ramesh Pai Manipal Group and Control Data Systems of the US, has developed Trading Post, an e-commerce software.

The software will be used by the National Informatics Centre, Government of India, at the Mumbai and New Delhi airports initially for handling export and import documentation. Other important customers for the software include Hindustan Lever (for a pilot project) and Coats India.

MCD-ECOM, a pioneer in e-commerce in India, offers its services from offices in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore. Shortly, the services will be extended to Chennai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, and Pune. A combination of 64 kbps leased lines, I-Net leased lines and dial-up is being added to interconnect these centres.


Indian software company launches ERP for the garment industry

Chennai-based Eco-Tech has recently launched version 3 of its Software for Textiles and Garment Exports (STAGE), an enterprise-wide client/server solution for the Indian textile industry. STAGE is an ERP package for order-based manufacture/exports in the textile industry.

The product is available for single-user, four-user and multiple-user environments, and is priced at Rs. 100,000 ($2,500) and upwards, depending on the number of users and features which have to be incorporated.


Tata Elxsi announces 3D animation software

Tata Elxsi, Bangalore, has announced the availability of Maya, 3D-animation software for Intel architecture-based hardware, running on Windows NT.

The native Windows NT implementation makes extensive use of OpenGL technology to provide computer graphics artists with a platform for running Maya. This gives customers complete freedom to move work between platforms without file transfer issues. Alongwith Maya, the advanced modules Maya Artisan and Maya F/X will also be available on Windows NT.

Maya is targeted at computer graphics studios, animation laboratories, special effects designers, and satellite television broadcasters and cartoon filmmakers. Hitherto available on Silicon Graphics, Maya was optimized to maximise system performance for the graphic capabilities of Windows NT systems.
